ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins lost left tackle Trent Williams at a bad time, with a tough upcoming schedule as the playoff race begins in earnest. His four-game suspension robbed the Redskins of a four-time Pro Bowler and team captain.The NFL suspended Williams last week for violation of the NFLs substance abuse policy. Its the second time hes been suspended in his career, the first occurring in 2011. But he had passed enough tests in the interim that his latest suspension wasnt longer.Losing four games might cost him a fifth straight Pro Bowl berth; it wont alter his status as a team leader, the Redskins said Monday.No, Redskins coach Jay Gruden said when asked if it impacted Williams status as a leader. People can take it in a lot of different ways, but Trents done a lot for this team, for this franchise and hes done a lot for the young guys in this building.... So it doesnt have any effect whatsoever on his captain [status] in my mind.Williams also has been voted a team captain for several years. On Monday, teammates stood by him, and his leadership, and said he should remain a captain when he returns. Center Spencer Long said there were multiple reasons why Williams deserved to remain a leader.His play on the field, the way he treats his guys, Long said. Hes a good teammate. Obviously this was not a great thing to have happen, but when you go out there and you trust a guy like that on the field with what he can do... that wont be broken over this. It was a mistake, but obviously the stuff that happens out [on the field] is way more meaningful and will last longer than something like this.Its a mistake, but it wont change our relationship with him. The bond is too deep for that.Williams was at the facility Monday, talking about Sundays opponent, Minnesota, with other linemen. The Redskins declined to make Williams available to the media.As a young offensive lineman on the team, you look up to him and you see him do things, Redskins right tackle Morgan Moses said. Being able to work with him the last couple years has been big, not just a leader and a captain, were losing a hell of a player as well.Hell still be here to help us and hes still a part of this team. Its our job as teammates and friends to stick with him through this tough little time.Ty Nsekhe will replace Williams and start his third career game. The 31-year-old Nsekhe started his career in Arena League 2 with Corpus Christi. Hes played for four Arena League teams and in the Canadian Football League. Of his 286 career snaps, 278 have come in the last two seasons with Washington.The Redskins say theyre confident in him. But they also lament losing Williams.I mean, it sucked, Redskins corner Josh Norman said. Hes definitely one of the leaders and one of the cornerstones on that line. Hes hard to replace, but we will.
